Dr Peter Davis is the Professor/Director of Neonatal Medicine at The Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne. He has led the Department of Newborn Research since 2009. He completed his MBBS at the University of Queensland in 1982 and underwent basic paediatric training in Brisbane. He completed his neonatal fellowship training at McMaster University, Canada where he developed an interest in Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence Based Medicine. After returning to Australia in 1993, he was appointed as a consultant neonatologist at The Royal Woman’s Hospital, Melbourne. His interest in non-invasive ventilation led to an MD through the University of Melbourne in 1998. He leads a team of enthusiastic clinical researchers interested in improving the care of babies in the delivery room and in the intensive care unit. He is a substantial contributor to the Cochrane Collaboration and a member of the neonatal subcommittee of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). Support for his research comes from the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council through a Practitioner Fellowship, a Program Grant and a Centre for Research Excellence Grant.

PERSONAL STATEMENT The focus of my research is the evaluating the science behind neonatal resuscitation and develop new techniques to improve efficacy of resuscitation in resource-limited settings. My laboratory located at the Davis campus specializes in lamb models of perinatal asphyxia. We have previously studied the role of endotracheal and intravenous epinephrine administered through catheters in lamb models of asphyxia and cardiac arrest. We intend to investigate a novel technique of administering and flushing epinephrine that can be performed without additional resources in developing countries. The principal investigators on this proposal have expertise in neonatal resuscitation (Vali) and pharmacokinetics (Knych) necessary to perform pilot studies outlined in this proposal. In addition to neonatal resuscitation, our laboratory evaluates the optimal oxygenation following lung injury associated with perinatal asphyxia and resuscitation. Our lab currently focuses on minimizing lung injury during ventilation following acute meconium aspiration (a common cause of respiratory failure in neonates) in a lamb model. My clinical interests include early detection of critical congenital heart disease and neonatal respiratory diseases using pulse oximetry and other indices of oxygenation. I am also the PI of a multicenter trial evaluating milrinone in congenital diaphragmatic hernia with oxygenation as the primary outcome. As a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Neonatal Resuscitation Steering Committee, I am involved in developing guidelines for neonatal resuscitation adapted worldwide. Simplifying neonatal resuscitation algorithm to hasten return of spontaneous circulation is important in improving survival without neurological morbidity in asphyxiated neonates. This pilot, if successful has the potential to lead to larger translational and clinical studies. These studies can change current practice of administering epinephrine through a sterile umbilical venous catheter (a time-consuming technique that involves expertise) followed by a sterile saline flush to a quick practice of direct injection into the umbilical vein and using baby’s own blood in the umbilical cord as a flush to propel epinephrine to the neonate’s heart. Rangasamy Ramanathan, MBBS, DCH, MD, FAAP is Professor of Pediatrics, Division Chief of Neonatology, and Director of NICU at LAC+USC Medical Center, Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. Dr. Ramanathan directs one of the largest fellowship programs in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine in the Country, with 18 fellows in the program. Dr. Ramanathan graduated from Stanley Medical College at Madras University (MBBS), and received DCH and MD in Pediatrics from the Institute for Child Health and Hospital for Children in Madras. He then went on to complete his residency in Pediatrics at Lincoln Medical Center, New York Medical College, in New York. He was a fellow in Neonatology at LAC+USC Medical Center, and a research fellow in Neonatology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. His major research interests include Surfactant therapy, NIV, and Oxygen toxicity. He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles published in many leading journals. He has written chapters in several textbooks, including Avery’s Diseases of the Newborn (WB Saunders Co., 2004), and Roger’s Textbook of Pediatric Intensive Care (5th Edition, 2016). He is a member of the editorial boards of Pediatric Research, TRIALS, the Journal of Pediatrics and Neonatology and the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards from the departments of Pediatrics, and Obstetrics, and is listed in Best Doctors in America each year by his peers since 2005. He was the recipient of David. N. Shaw Physician of the Year Award in 2004 from Good Samaritan Hospital for his medical leadership in the Perinatal Center. This award recognizes physicians for their extraordinary dedication to patient care and compassion for patients and staff. Dr. Ramanathan in 2012 also received “Hero of the Medical Center Award” for his dedicated and innovative leadership of the NICU and the expert care and treatment of the World’s third smallest baby delivered at LAC+USC Medical Center. He received Honor Award from Brazilian Congress of Intensive Care Medicine for his contribution to intensive care in South America in 2015. He designed a simple nasal interface, called, RAM nasal cannula that is used widely across many countries to deliver NIV in neonates. Dr. Ramanathan also developed RAMSMEETA Ventilator, on a low-cost ventilator with a built in monitor to deliver bCPAP, bNIPPV or bIMV for use in low- and middle-income countries. Most recently, in 2017, he received Life Time Achievement Award from National Neonatology Forum (NNF) during the 37th Annual Conference of NNF for his contribution to neonatal care. Dr. Ramanathan is frequently an invited speaker at national and international scientific meetings and conducts workshops on neonatal care in different parts of the world.

Patent : I developed a low cost device for providing therapeutic hypothermia for babies with HIE based on phase changing material and hold a patent for this. From 2010 to 2012, I worked on this and won the innovation award at the national conference. Since then have cooloborated with the industry to produce this commercially (miracradle- http://www.miracradle.com/) and this is currently being used in more than 100 hospitals throughout India, in Turkey, South Africa and Kenya. The cost of this device is 1/10th or less as compared to the other devices available in the market. This device has won many awards from the industry (DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Programme: 4th out of top 50 innovations, Winner of India Innovates: 2020 Award in the Healthcare Category, Top 10 innovations in Asia-Winner under the Innovative Medical Equipment category,Winner under the Use of Plastics in Healthcare/ Personal Care category,Winner under the Most Innovative Company Manufacturing sector -Micro and Small Enterprise category, Winner of Healthcare Excellence Award and included in the WHO compendium of innovative health technologis for low resource settings). I am working as consultant neonatologist in private hospital in Dubai past 12 years. I could get the NICU upgraded from level 1 (3 bedded) NICU to level III (14 bedded) NICU approved by DHA. I am taking care of 23-week extremely preterm babies with reasonably good outcome. I have been involved in teaching nurses and registrars, making protocols building up the unit reputation across the city and other emirates as well. I get referrals from Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah (Belhaul, Al Raffa hospital, central private hospital, and Irani hospital, Injab etc). I have NRP instructor licence and I am training doctors and nurses for the same. After joining the organization I upgraded my knowledge skill and degree by doing a fellowship in UK in 2009. I am undergoing MSC Neonatology from Southampton University UK. I have started NNF and IAP fellowship first time overseas. I am one of the editors of Indian journal. I have publications in indexed journals. I regularly attend PAS (AAP) and UENPS (European) conferences where my paper was also accepted. My paper received young scientist award in 13th Congress of the Federation of Asia and Oceania Prenatal Societies in 11th Congress of the Perinatal Society of Malaysia in 2004. I was involved in development of provider and facilitator modules on basic newborn nursing for training at District Hospitals and FRUs nurses. UNICEF and WHO recognized the importance and helped in forming web site for the same. Financial aid was given by Saving New Born Life to run the workshops at national and international level. I made documentary video on Kangaroo Mother Care, asepsis, total parental nutrition, on insertion of umbilical venous and arterial lines and administration of Surfactant for the training of health professionals. KMC video has been chosen by WHO website. I have been chosen by DHA as auditing member for the medico legal cases in which I am involved. GRANTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS Pediatric Obesity Prevention Program; 2017 Dubai – UAE I planned a school based obesity prevention program through Emirates Hospital partnership with Dubai health Authority. The program was proposed in six schools in Dubai with the ultimate goal of national implementation.
